Video Editing - The Coffee Shot

Video Editing - The Coffee Shot

What do you do with the RAW footage that you have captured, can you just put the clips together and post it online?

You could,  but to stand out you want to take the steps give the video that different edge.

Check the video below where you see the steps I take to create a thrown together raw video in to an enticing advert to share online.

Raw Footage / The Rough Cut

Is this video telling a story? Are the clips working together? Does it work?

These are the questions you are answering in your rough cut. If you can’t tell the story with the clips you have then stop what you are doing and capture what you need to proceed or move on to the next video. If there is no story there is no video.

Movement and Transitions

Add drama and excitement to the shot by getting the movement right and the transition flowing in between shots.

This is the next step of the story, in this video when I was pouring items into the filter I pushed in to go with the movement of the subject, when filling the cup with coffee I pulled out again matching the movement of the subject.

This is all adding to what is happening and changing a boring stationary shot in to an exciting moving shot.

Colour Grading and Adding Text

The story works the movement and the transition ad the excitement, but the colours are flat almost grey in tone. That is where colour grading come in to play. You are adding your look to the video making the colours pop and giving its feel to the video.

Colour grading is another part of the story, is the scene warm and inviting or is it cold and bitter. Colour grading is one of the deciding factors in telling the audience what to feel.

You can also use text as a tool for story telling, whether you are setting the scene by telling people where you are or adding the tag line to your video to suggest what to do next, Text is a tool to hit home the information you want your audience to know.

Sound Design

Audio out of camera doesn’t always work, whether there is background noise or its too quiet. If you can work your sound design just right it adds the element of realism to the shot. When the coffee is dripping they can see it but what does it sound like? By adding the sound effect on, the audience is drawn in even more.

Music

Music and video go hand in hand, Music adds the excitement, the suspense, the drama. It tells the audience what they should be feeling more than any other step. However, make sure that you have the right song or the whole illusion is lost.

The music in this video is upbeat and exciting because thats what we want the audience feel about having a coffee. If I used lullaby music or the jaws theme the audience would have been turned off and lost as the imagery and music do not match.

Project Done!

There are the steps taken after you shot the video, it doesn’t always happen in this order, but each step is there to up your video content quality.

Let’s arrange a coffee and discuss how Your Video Team can help you improve your video content.
